Why Psychology?
Psychology is perhaps one of the most important fields of
study, as it attempts to understand human behavior. Why are some of the members of your family so
odd? Why do you feel a particular
attraction to certain individuals? Why
do some of you cringe when a friend scrapes their fork across a plate? Why do boys wear blue and girls wear
pink? Why are you not all jumping up and
down, yelling like monkeys as you read this?
Objectives:
·
Improve self-understanding and awareness of
multiple perspectives.
·
Master the core concepts of psychology.
·
Improve critical thinking skills.
·
Clarify values.
·
To understand and use psychology in your
everyday life.
Topics:
v Personality
v Development
v Emotions
v Sensation & Perception
Expectations:
Please come to class
ready to learn, actively participate and stay on task. This is an elective course, but it is
academic in nature and so please approach it with the appropriate mindset. No late assignments are accepted and will
result in an automatic “0” grade. If
you are absent, you have two days of make-up per missed day. Please visit my blog for missed assignments,
calendars, readings, etc.: Mscarlsclass.blogspot.com
Grading:
Psychology Journal: 15%
Your psychology journal
(a collection of all your notes, worksheets, activities and homework) will be
collected throughout the semester.
Please stay organized, (you need a three-ring-binder).
Project &
Participation: 20%
Psychology is a very
interactive class, including (but not limited to) discussions, experiments and
activities. If you want to succeed in
this portion of your grade, you must come to class each day, ready to
participate. You will start each class
with 5 points. If you are not engaged,
participating or putting forth your best effort, you will lose points.
Quizzes: 15%
Quizzes will be given
on the day a particular section of reading is due. This is my way of holding you
accountable. If you are keeping up,
these will be easy points to obtain.
Tests: 35%
There will be a cumulative
test following each chapter. Remember
CUMULATIVE means that any previous content discussed can and will be included.
In addition to the tests, you will have various group and independent projects.
Outside Reading: 5%
Students will read and
review one non-fiction psychology-themed book, chosen by Ms. Carl. This assignment will be due two weeks prior
to the end of the semester, (but of course feel free to turn it in
sooner).
Final:
10%
There will be a cumulative
final at the end of the semester.
